Bingo bags festive cheer this summer

17 December 2025

As thousands of residents and holidaymakers flock to Cape Town’s beaches this festive season, the City’s Urban Waste Management (UWM) Directorate is stepping up its public awareness efforts to remind everyone that clean, welcoming public spaces begin with each of us.

Throughout December and early January, the UWM Public Awareness Team, joined by the City’s much-loved mascot, Bingo, will be visiting beaches and other high-traffic recreation areas to encourage responsible waste behaviour, share fun educational activities with children and support partner organisations working to protect coastal ecosystems. The team has already made appearances at Sunrise Beach, Camps Bay and Green Point Park, with more to come.

The initiative forms part of the City’s ongoing drive to reduce littering, minimise waste entering the marine environment and promote a culture of shared responsibility.

‘Cape Town’s beaches are among our city’s greatest assets. We want residents and visitors to enjoy them safely and proudly, and that means disposing of waste correctly and keeping the coastline clean. Our teams will be out in full force, educating, engaging and spreading festive spirit, so that everyone can play a part in looking after our environment.

The City also appeals to all residents and visitors to make responsible waste choices while enjoying Cape Town’s beaches this summer. Bin it, don’t leave it behind, and look out for Bingo if you need a recycling refresher,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

Festive-season engagements include awareness sessions, waste-themed games, school-holiday activations and collaborations with various City departments and partner organisations. Please refer to the schedule below if you are interested in any of these activations.
